new smf patch

i saw there is a new patch for smf that fixes php 4.4. problems, so i think it is a good idea to install this patch before my provider upgrade php to this version.
Now i m using SMF 1.0.3 with  Mambo-SMF Forum Login Module v.1.3.1a
Can someone tell me the correct way to upgrade the smf?

uninstall the SMF-Mambo mod first,
then apply your SMF patch,
then re-apply the SMF-Mambo mod.
