Sry for the completely newb question.  I've installed everything and run through the checklist.  Everything checks out in Mamo configuration except the database.  Mambo is installed in root and SMF is installed in /forums....both via Fantastico web installer, not installed by myself.  It is still saying insall SMF in same database as Mambo and I have no clue how to accomplish this.  I have the default smf_ prefix but apparantly I still have to make sure they are in the same database.  If not the steps, I would appreciate any links even that would explain this to me so I can understand what I'm looking at and where to fix it.  I know Mambo pretty well and SMF, but not SQL.
